Review: Huawei MateBook X Pro makes some upgrades

Huawei is best known as one of the most popular smartphone makers in the world, but the Chinese company has a growing sideline in the wider world of consumer electronics, including laptops.

The firm released the first edition of its MateBook X Pro laptop in 2020, but the 2021 edition makes some subtle improvements that shouldn’t go unappreciated by long-time users.

The latest MateBook X Pro (RRP €1,899) retains the sleek, simple design and 13.9-inch touchscreen of the previous edition, but boasts slimmer bezels, measures just 14.6mm and weighs as little as 1.33kg, making it extremely portable and easy to handle.

The device comes with a 3K LTPS, 3:2 aspect ratio touchscreen — which is as easy and intuitive to use as the Free Touch touchpad mouse when it comes to scrolling, zooming in/out, clicking and double clicking links, taking screenshots, etc. — and a 91% screen-to-body ratio, which can support stunning HDR video, making it perfect for streaming.

The MateBook X Pro, which runs Windows, has improved processing power with the Intel Core i7 processor combined with 16GB of LPDDR4x memory, 1TB of SSD and Huawei’s Shark Fin dual fan design and air-cooled, ultra-thin VC technology, making for a smoother, more efficient user experience and less chance of overheating.

Perhaps due to its small size, the laptop has just two USB-C ports, a single USB-A port and a headphone jack, but no SD card or HDMI slot, with Huawei talking up its Huawei Share and Multi-screen Collaboration technologies.

Mutli-screen Collaboration in itself is pretty impressive, allowing users to emulate and control three apps simultaneously from their phone from the desktop, and drag and drop files between devices. You can also open and edit files from your phone on the notebook as well as make and receive audio and video calls in what should be a big win for multitaskers.

The laptop also boasts four upgraded split-frequency speakers to deliver immersive surround sound while the advanced edge microphone set-up and EQ algorithm help detect sound more remotely and more accurately. The recessed webcam is also positioned in the keyboard, helping to protect your privacy while give users a better view of the screen.

The 65W USB-C pocket charger provides fast charging not only for the MateBook X Pro, but it also support charging for Huawei phone and tablets, but the 56Wh2 battery and the power management system supports 10-hour life anyway.
